Health Services: OB/GYN

UM/CHS GYN SPECIALTY CLINIC

A significant number of low-income women living in underserved pockets of  Miami’s Little
Haiti/Little River area do not receive gynecological and obstetrical care.  The CHS clinic has
greatly contributed to increasing access to gynecological and obstetrical care for these women.
However, patients with abnormal pap smears and those who are diagnosed with advanced
cervical cancer continue to have difficulty accessing the specialty services required for their
care.  There is an urgent need for gynecological follow-up care beyond basic screening and
diagnosis.

In response to this need, CHS, in collaboration with the University of Miami Miller School of
Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, opened a new GYN clinic at The Center
for Haitian Studies, Health & Human Services. In addition to providing care and treatment for
women from the local community, this new GYN specialty clinic serves as a key community
site for area physicians to refer patients with abnormal pap results and/or advanced
gynecological malignancies for treatment and follow up care.

The UM/CHS GYN SPECIALTY CLINIC also offers UM medical students, residents and
fellows a unique opportunity to train under one of the leading practitioners in the field of
OBGYN.

Dr. Jean-Baptiste Charlot has been a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and
Gynecology (FACOG) for over three (3) decades, and has served as one of the top surgeons in
the U.S. Air Force from 1981 to 1984.  From 1976 to 1981 served Attending Physician at
Boston University Hospital, Beth Israel (affiliated with Harvard University) and as clinical
instructor at Carney Hospital and St Margaret Hospital (both affiliated with Tufts University).

Dr. Charlot currently provides OBGYN services at the CHS clinic. He is on staff at Jackson
Memorial Hospital and has a faculty appointment to supervise and train
residents and fellows under the Jackson Health System/University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Residency
Program
